AJourney to Empowering Breastfeeding Moms Through Breast Milk Testing
My husband and I were so focused on getting pregnant and staying pregnant that I didn’t realize how hard breastfeeding would be. After our son was born, what I’d hoped would be a natural bonding experience turned into a routine of painful feeds, cracked and bleeding nipples, sleepless nights, and constant worries. Despite the pain and exhaustion, I was encouraged by the idea that “breast is best.” And then, of course, I got my period only three months postpartum, further depleting my energy. With all the changes to my body and hormones, I began to worry: was my milk really providing the nutrition our son needed?
Sixteen months after our son’s birth, our daughter arrived. As overjoyed as my husband and I were to welcome her, we faced a new set of concerns. She was born with a head circumference in the 5th percentile, so we kept a close watch to ensure she was developing well. On top of that, I worried about whether my body had fully recovered and if my breast milk could provide the essential nutrients she needed. The demands of supporting two pregnancies, breastfeeding one child while expecting another, and then nursing again only six months later weighed on me, both physically and emotionally.
Soon, new concerns arose. During our daughter’s early months, she was frequently ill, and at one point, she had blood in her stool. We were terrified. Our pediatrician advised me to cut out dairy from my diet in case she had an allergy or intolerance, but the uncertainty was frustrating. Why was she so unwell? Was there something in my milk that wasn’t supporting her as it should? My son hadn’t experienced these issues. When I asked about testing my breast milk, I was shocked to discover that no such service was available in Canada.
From this, the vision for Lacto Labs was born. My husband and I realized that, like
